Wave TV Episodes 10 and 11

Week 7

Wave TV 2014
Thanks to all the students who have put their hands up for next year's Wave TV. I'll send permission slips home with you next Thursday and will expect them back the following Thursday at the latest. No permission slip = no Wave TV.

Episode 10
This has gone a little slower than expected. Most of the stories are in the project and we're working on credits and final edits. We've had one or two technical malfunctions such as incompatible movies from a non-mac computer, and trouble with editing and re-editing a tricky green screen story. Two stories were made then completely disappeared so we had to re-build them from We're getting pretty good at problem solving!

This Thursday
9-9:45- Milly & Georgie- re-build the Gala story
9:45-10:30- Chatelle & Abby- finish the Uganda story. Mrs Haswell has emailed you additional information about her photos.
11-12:00- Jake & Troy- finish music & credits
12:00 onwards- Check permissions & final edit. Send to Vimeo. Post on the school website.

Episode 11

9-9:30- Jesper & Weston- Check through iMovie story. Firmly edit. Take out the really bumpy bits and make sure the overall message is clear for viewers.
9:30-10:30- Finn & Nic- Finish animation and build the story in iMovie.
11-11:30- Edit down the road patrol story.
11:30- 12:30- Kapa haka- Edit, edit, edit...
1:30 onwards. Final edits and tweaking.

Thanks to Jake & Troy for the music they've been creating for opening and closing episodes. It's great to see so many people such as Chenthi, Yasmine & Em creating their own creative background music in Garageband.

Term 4 Planning

If you are involved in making Episodes 9,10 or 11 please make sure you watch the blog and WOT so you know what to do. Come to all meetings you are expected at the times you are asked as we have fierce deadlines.

Here are the dates for Term 4:
Week 1 Friday Oct 18
Week 2 Friday Oct 25
Week 3 Thursday 31 Oct & Friday 1 Nov
Week 5 Thurs 14 & Fri 15 Nov
Week 6 Thursday 21 & Friday 22 Nov
Week 7 Thursday 28 & Friday 29 Nov

Wave TV 3 is on all day this Friday, not Thursday as I said last week. Can Yasmine, Nyah, Georgie, Milly, Em, Georgia, Kai, Ben Carson, Harry Dunn, Melissa, Cyzck, Jake, Troy, Brenna, Jesper and Hayden please meet me straight after the roll to scriptwrite and film. Erin, Emilee, Phoebe, Ella and Emma are filming after morning tea with Dylan and Harrison (yr 8) as crew. Other students will be called during the day as required.

Episode 9. The goal for this Friday is to get Episode 9 completely completed. If it is you who needs to finish a story and your name is not in What's on Top please come along on Friday anyway. You did a great push last Friday so well done. We will call people throughout the day to checking OK their parts. Yasmin's and Nic - your story, due to illness last term, is the last to be completed so needs to be done this week. Please organise your backgrounds for NIWA if you haven't done so yet. This episode needs to be posted by the end of the weekend.

Episode 10. Well done also for your hard work. The stories for Episode 10 so far are:
AFL- Troy and Jake, crew Georgia & Em. Thanks Em also for helping with Garageband music.
Room 16's Flowers exhibition Ella, Emma, Emilee, Erin & Phoebe- Harrison & Dylan as crew.
Room 1b & 15's sasa  (Harry, Room 15)
The Gala- Milly & Georgie (crew?)
Paremata Idol finals (Em, Kai, Lyndsay & Georgia (own crew)
Year 8s leaving (Brenna)
There was also another story but I am not sure what it was? I'll check the board on Friday unless someone can remember and pops it in a comment below. Mrs Haswell would also like a follow up story in one of these episodes after her trip to Uganda. Perhaps Chantelle & Hayden can do this? Let's aim to get this episode out by Week 5 or 6.

Episode 11. This is supposed to be a 'How To' episode designed to help Wave TV 2014 know what they are supposed to to do as crew. We'll sort out who does what for this on Friday. There is also a 'How to' Kapa Haka component. Nic, you had a 'how to' idea as well that you have time to explore. This episode needs to be out by about Week 7 so people have a chance to watch it before school ends.

Next year will be a little different because we will work in small groups each of which will be led by those of our awesomely talented 2013 year 7s who are still interested in making and anchoring Wave TV. Hopefully we will be able to make 3 or 4 episodes per term in small groups of about 8. In the next week or so I will put the call out for expressions of interest in Wave TV 2014 from 2014's year 6, 7 & 8s.

Thanks, Caroline

Holiday Time!

What a busy term here at Wave TV and at Paremata School in general. Just in the last week we had the Senior Production, a Kapa Haka visit from Rangikura School, a whole school assembly and an art exhibition in the Year 5 and 6 team. Phew! Not to mention the many students who also were involved with the Artsplash festival, ICAS and played in the school band.

On top of a busy term the Wave TV crew have worked hard to produce 3 episodes of Wave TV that are now up on the school website: episodes 6, 7 and 8. Please feel free to leave a comment below to give us any feedback on our news programmes. Episode 9 is nearly complete and should hopefully be posted by Week 2 of Term 4. We will complete two episodes in Term 4. Episode 10 already has 3 stories started. The stories in Episode 11 will be more about how we do things at Wave TV than school stories. It will be used next year as a 'how to' set of tutorials for the students who will make up the Wave TV crew in 2014. It will also celebrate our Wave TV year.

One thing that has stood out for me as we made these episodes was the willingness of students to take risks in order to tell their stories well. In presentations this ranged from Peteru's Batman hero to Morgan and Brenna's characterisation of disorganised news readers. While editing people tried new tricks such as exploring combinations of video, photos, music, sound effects, voice overs and transitions to create the mood they wanted and tell the story in the best way they could. I have noticed the reporters and anchors are getting really good at thinking about stories from the point of view of the audience. They have made their stories interesting and fun to watch as well as informative. The green screen research we did at the beginning of the term has really paid off because now we've got the lighting right we don't have so much trouble with people going see through. In episode 9 you will see something we call Movie Magic where we use all kinds of combinations of scriptwriting, filming, editing tools, green screening and cleverness to explore the possibilities of iMovie for telling our stories in the best way we can.

Well done everyone for a wonderful Wave TV term. A big Thank You list follows now! First of all a special thank you goes to the students who were part of Groups 1, 2 and 3 for helping me develop my teaching this term. You were so fantastic to work with! A huge thank you as well to Whaea Tia, Sally, Emma, Mrs Leggett, Miss Milne, Mrs Bassett and Rachel for letting these marvellous students glide so easily from their home classes to Wave TV and back each day. Further Wave TV thanks also go to Mrs Gorman, a staunch supporter of Wave TV,  for letting students frequently film in the library and for supporting them as they do so. A big thank you to Bryce for encouraging and enabling us to get our multimedia processes up and running smoothly at Paremata School. Thanks also to Karyn for continuing to be the go-to photographer/ videographer for school events. I am not sure that your name appears in the credits at the end of each episode nearly as often as it should. A final great big thank you for this term goes to Em's dad and grandad who have happily lent us some wonderful lights to work with while we are figuring out what we need to buy for our studio lighting. Thank you all on behalf of the Wave TV crew.

Thanks Everyone,
Caroline

There are some ideas already up on the wall of the studio.
See you on Thursday or Friday! Caroline

PS- Melissa- I have the Photopeach password tucked away somewhere so will get that to you on Friday. That is a great idea. We can pop it on the blog.

Week 5 update

Week 5

Hi everyone,
How are you all?
Not much to say this week as our usual timetable is not taking place on Friday but...

  • I am unsure if the anchors filming for ep 6 has taken place, if so, great!
  • Filming for 7 need to happen
  • Editing for 6 and 7 (?)
  • Any scripting for old or new stories must happen
Can you all tell me if this is correct, it is just what I memorised from the board. :D

Thanks, Melissa

PS: let me know if I missed anything out please!

Wednesday 14 August 2013

Week 3

Hi Everyone,
Congratulations to the group working on Episode 7- what creative anchors! It has been quite intense at times working in such a small group so I think you have done really well. This group have been trialling the usefulness of storyboards to help plan each story, and to help the Director and Camera person know what is needed for each shoot.

We have done a lot of experimenting with lighting the green screen. If you look on the tabs at the top of this blog you'll see a page full of green screening information. Most of it is about lighting. Once we have the lighting right it'll be time to play with effects such as flying, so there is a tutorial on how to do that on that page as well.

Episode 5 went onto the Paremata School website today. Yay! Episode 6 has everything ready except the anchors who we will shoot on Friday of Week 4. That Friday will be devoted to completing Episode 6. Episode 7 is scripted, storyboarded and filmed. There is in editing timetable in the Wave TV studio the crew are following to get it completed by the end of Friday. Well done everyone!

Thanks, Caroline

PS- remember to enter the Paremata School Gala Poster Competition!

Wednesday 7 August 2013

Week 2 Term 3

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for your patience while the our three WTV groups produce Episodes 7, 8 and 9 this term. It will be interesting to see how it goes making each episode with a smaller crew. Everyone will need to be a bit busier.
Episode 5 and 6 are getting there. Episode 5 just needs a few tweaks from Abby, Jake, Chenthi and Georgia then it is good to go. Hopefully we can get this done this week.
Episode 6 needs the anchors shot so we will need to find a time to get that done with Callum and Harrison. I think everything except that part is finished in the white lappy.

Keep an eye on WOT in case your name is called for something.
Thanks, Caroline.

It won't take much to figure out what story this picture is from!

Monday 15 July 2013

Mid-Year Holidays

We are now halfway through our school year and have published 4 episodes of Wave TV. Our next episode is all filmed and going through the editing process. It should be published onto the school website by the end of Week One Term 3.

Episode 6 is partially filmed and also going through the editing process. I apologise to Callum for not printing out the episode 6 anchor's script last Friday. Callum and Harrison, if you are keen to practise you can find the script on the wiki. We will workshop this script in Week One of Term 3 to make sure it fits with the stories. We won't be able to use greenscreening in this episode because the white lappy that we are editing on only can cope with imovie 08.

We are committed to making 10 episodes this year to accommodate all the year 8 people who were interested in being anchors. We are well on track with Episodes 7, 8 and 9 due to come out in Term 3 as well.

As the Wave TV Crew know, Wave TV will look a little different in Term 3. I will be at school all of Week One getting everything from Term 2 as completed as possible and prepping for our longer sessions. I will send for you as needed using What's on Top or student runners. Or watch the blog. We will have three two week sessions of Wave TV with small crews each producing one episode. Group One will make their show in Weeks 2 & 3 (5-16 August), Group Two in Weeks 5 & 6 (26 August- 6 September), and Group Three will be in Weeks 8 & 9 (16-27 September).

Some of our lovely WTV students are away in various interesting and exciting parts of the world right now. I wonder if they will remember to post here to let us know what they're up to? I hope so!

Have a wonderful restful break everyone. I will see you on Monday in Week One Term1! Ka kite ano, Caroline.

Week six blog

Hi Everyone. We are at the point of Episode 4 where the computer is at a bottle neck with everyone editing their stories and other people uploading Episode 5 footage and photos. We plan sometime in the future to have 2 or 3 computers on the go, and have one imovie project for each episode. Unless someone can suggest a clever alternative?

In other Wave TV news Louis and Adam did a great job of practising with the green screen to try to get their lighting right so they didn't turn see through. Well done!

These are the things we need to do this Friday. I love seeing Jake and Chenthi taking over the blog organisation here. Thanks Abby and Yasmine for your organising as well. Thanks, Caroline.

Episode 4
  • Emily and Weston Fairy Day- edit photos & music
  • Emma and Georgie -Tech story- edit
  • Ryan and Isaac- Westpac story- photos from Mr Pesefea- edit - music
  • Yasmine and Nick- SPCA edit - photos - music
Episode 5
  • Workshop script with reporters and Lachlan and Dylan first thing.
  • Chenthi and Georgia script Camp intro at 9:30
  • Abby and Jake- New Teachers- film 9:30
  • Lyndsay and Melman x country film 2:00
  • Are your crews all organised?

Week 5 Friday Meeting

Hi Everyone,
Well done with Episode 4 last Friday. Everyone worked efficiently and thoughtfully to get this episode  filmed and partially edited. I read somewhere that Peter Jackson said that editing is where the movie is really made. It is true that during editing you are making all those important decisions about the look, sound and feel of the stories for Wave TV. You are becoming increasingly skilled at using imovie and the results are really telling the stories well. I hope your audience is enjoying viewing Wave TV as much as we are enjoying making them. If you are a Wave TV audience please leave us some constructive feedback in the comments below.

Planning for Friday
  • Watch Episode 4 so far and critique it.
  • Organise what we need to do today and timetable the computer for editing.
  • Get any extra photos and footage together.
  • Emily and Weston need a photo for your fairy day background. Emily can you access one?
  • Editing editing editing.
  • Anything else?
  • Georgie, are you filming or photographing the Cross Country? Feel free to use the WTV camera. Please let me know in a comment how that went. I wonder what the weather will do?
Please remember to leave a comment below so I know you have read this post. See you on Friday. Caroline.

Week 4 Friday Meeting

Wow! It's nearly the middle of the year! That is amazing. We have committed to at least 10 episodes this year to accommodate all the year 8s who were keen to anchor. We are working on Episode 4 this Friday and it is nearly June so I think we are making great progress. It's natural that we would go more slowly in the first term while we are getting used to Wave TV and new classes. Soon we will be like pros!

It was great to work out who needs or wants to get better at what skills last week. Milly, Hayden and Ben were at Writer's Group at that time so can add their names on Friday. I liked the way people used the list to select crews who had less experience in that area, such as camera work and directing. It'd be great sometime to go over our job descriptions as I think they need updating. You will have a better idea of what you do in each role than I do.

Ok, organisation for this week. Let's get Episode 4 as close to complete as possible.

  • Editing. Lots of it. We need to timetable ourselves so people are editing their stories in 40 min blocks all day.
  • We'll also need a general editing crew for credits and titles- perhaps Milly and Ryan after morning tea? Or Hayden and Ben?
  • Filming- Anchors only I think, but there may be more. After morning tea?
  • Louis and Adam- where will you film? Will you green screen or be somewhere around the school?
  • Who were the crew for the Anchor filming? Was it Troy and Isaac?
Anything else? Add it below. Please remember to write in a comment below to let me know you've read the blog post. Thanks and see you on Friday. Caroline.

Hmm, I wonder what stories these pictures are from?

Week 3 Term 2 Friday Meeting

Hi Everyone,
I was really impressed with the way you smoothly organised yourselves last Friday. We achieved a lot because of that. Well done!
  • This Friday we need to fully complete Episode 3. We are so close!
Episode 4 Filming Friday
Reporters need to choose locations to suit your stories. Think about wind sound, people sound and light/ shadows. Let me know where you will film in a comment below.
  • Louis and Adam- Practise, practise and practise your lines so they are smoooooth and natural :)
Friday's To Do List
  • View Episode 3 & critique.
  • Organise what we need to do to finish it.
  • Practice Episode 4 with Anchors and Reporters.
  • Plan the day's editing and filming.
  • Chenthi & Kai- you have your own morning plan?
  • Get scripts, locations and reporters ready for filming.
  • Film anchors and stories- times are on most scripts.
  • Download footage straight into the computer. Delete from the camera. Put the camera on charge.
We need to delete lots of old footage off the cameras. Are there any volunteers for this? Write in a comment if you are keen, otherwise I will select some deleters.

What stories are these from?

Episode 1 2013

The first episode is all scripted, the anchors have their scripts at home and are practising, practising and practising. Most of the stories are filmed and uploaded to imovie.
These are some of the things that have gone really well over the last 2 weeks:

  • We had a fantastic team of editors working through last Friday on it Georgia N, Emma and Emily.
  • Our expert camera teams worked super-efficiently to film our stories.
  • Presenters and reporters were totally prepared they knew exactly what they wanted to say and how they wanted to say it.
  • The crew are getting into the habit of putting the cameras on charge as soon as they come back to the studio, and of immediately uploading and deleting footage off the cameras.
  • The crew are trying to move around the school quietly so they make the least disruption to classes and get the filming done efficiently.
  • Everyone works really well together.
  • Everyone chipped in to help match the anchor scripts and the story scripts for episode 1.
  • More experienced crew are helping the less experienced gain skills in producing stories and editing.
  • Crew are leaving the studio tidy and organised.
  • Crew are problem-solving effectively to create the show they want to present.
  • Crew are motivated and independent when working on stories.
  • Everyone is managing their own behaviour extremely well- even when things get frustrating or scary or don't work or we have to re-shoot!
I am super impressed with the effort everyone is making so far. I am looking forward to filming the anchor segment this Friday.
  • Anchors- (Finn and Samuel) please remember to wear any colour clothing but green this Friday, as we will shoot in front of a green screen for the first time.
  • Anchors: Whaea Tia, Mr Pesefea and Sally all have copies of your script in their google drive.
  • Crew: Ryan on the camera, Chantelle directing and Weston assistant.
Well done! Caroline.

Lesson 1: Camera Skills

It's only Week 2, we haven't even met up yet, and still your Wave TV teacher is giving out homework!!!! Sad but true.

Click on the tab bar above this post where it says WTV 2013 Camera Skills. Read through the four tutorials and watch the video posted there before next Friday. When we meet we'll talk about what you've found out, work out which shots or angles you'd like to experiment with, then we'll video or photograph them and present to the crew.
  • A goal for the day is also to identify the shots we will probably use the most while making Wave TV News.
Extra if you're super-keen:
Practise these shots at home if you have a camera or a video camera or ipad or ipod etc. For some shots it doesn't matter if you're videoing or photographing. You could show us what you've done on Friday

Don't worry if it doesn't all make sense yet as we'll go over it on Friday. Happy Homeworking!
Caroline

Thursday 31 January 2013

Welcome to Wave TV 2013!

I hope everyone at Paremata School had a great holiday! I had a marvellous break. Most of my time was spent in the Nelson area with my parents. I went to the river and the beach a lot, trawled through junk shops for treasures and went for the odd bush walk. If you look closely in the photo you can see where I walked to one day.
I am really looking forward to getting back into Wave TV. The 2012 crew did a fantastic job of identifying news stories, scripting, filming/ presenting and editing. They showed a huge level of motivation and commitment.
I have 2 start-up goals for the 2013 crew and both of them are about communication.

  • We need to get better at communicating what we do here at Wave TV with our school community.
  • The second thing to improve is around helping the school communicate with us. Have we really got all the stories? What do we know about what goes on in classrooms and syndicates? How can we get better at finding out? These are the questions I will be asking the crew when we have our first Wave TV meeting on Friday February 15th, in Week 2.

As many of you know, I have won a Ministry of Education study award for 2013 to work on the final year of a Master of Education degree. My area of interest is in effectively incorporating technology/ ICT into teaching and learning to enhance learning. I will spend the year working on a thesis around this topic. Luckily for me, Wave TV is a wonderful example of using ICT effectively and creatively for learning so developing Wave TV into the best student TV we can create is what the thesis will be all about. I'll be in school working with the crew at the Wave TV studio (old dental clinic) all day every Friday. I'll sometimes be in during the week as well.

Wave TV is all about students telling their own school stories. Along the way they are developing skills in visual language, narrative, digital storytelling, reading, creativity, writing, reporting, identifying appropriate ways to present information, critical thinking, problem solving, film-making, working as a team, student led learning, analysis, writing for an audience and much more. It is also great fun!

I am really looking forward to Wave TV 2013!
