Image Copyright

We have been green screening quite a bit lately. This means we film in front of a green screen hanging on the wall. Then when we edit we pop pictures or video behind the video we have shot. We try to make sure the images we use match the story we are telling. In iPhoto we have an album of background images that we use frequently. Most of these photos have been taken by me or are produced at school. Taking photos of the school murals and student artwork are great ways to make backgrounds.

Sometimes the pictures we have in our background album aren't right for a story and we make a search using google images. This is where we can have trouble working out if we are allowed to use a picture or not without breaking copyright. Sometimes we contact the photographer directly and ask them. This has worked well the 3 or 4 times we have done it. We acknowledge the photographer in the credits and send them a link to the finished episode.

Sometimes it is hard to tell what copyright is on a photo, or where to search for the right sort of images and licenses. Here is an excellent blogpost from the Edublog people that explains copyright and suggests ways we can use images without problems.
